YOUNG MEMBERS

Dear Friends,

Hi! How are you? I am writing to you in your capacity as a Young Member of FIABCI.

Allow me to introduce myself to you, my name is Chris Tan. I have been most honoured to be appointed as to the FIABCI Board of Directors by our World President Lisa and been assigned to preside over the Young Members Committee, taking over from Antonio. I admire the work done by Antonio and Martin before him; and hope to at least emulate their successful leadership for the benefit of all. I am learning and look forward to the guidance of each and every one of you.

Please find a copy of my FIABCI CV attached for your perusal and you can also check out this URL for my complete profile –

Before everything else, it is important to know who we (Young Members) are and where we stand in the Federation. From the information that I obtained from Bruno on 26 May 2009, our Secretary General then, I have done some analysis on the demographics of the FIABCI Young Members and I attached the same herein for your perusal.

Generally, my findings are as follows:

  • There are 266 of us world wide as at May 2009;
  • We are male dominant (75%);
  • 91% of us are regular members;
  • More than 60% of us are above 30 years old (Young Members are those below 35);
  • Almost 50% of us are from Europe with the Netherlands contributing most of the members while America and Asia Pacific made up one quarter each.
  • We have no young members from Africa (apparently in the process of registration).

I hope this give you some ideas of what Young Members are all about in FIABCI. You got to know who we are; before we can even fall in love with this institution we passionately called the "Young Members" of FIABCI.

My visions for the Young Members Committee are simply as follows:

  1. We are the FUTURE of FIABCI therefore we must be effectively reflected to the current leadership of FIABCI we all wants in the future. Therefore, I urge each and every one of you to give me your thoughts in this regard. I hope to compile your feedbacks and reflect this to the current leadership of FIABCI as soon as the next meeting of the Board of Directors. You can perhaps use the Vision Board approach (I will soon get this space for you on line) or simply write a "Postcard from the Future" telling me what FIABCI is like 5 to 10 years from now.  I will compile a report at the end of the day for the benefit of all.

  2. Based on what we want from FIABCI that we have so described under Item 1 above, we must define the role of Young Members in the Federation. To this end, we can perhaps formulate a FIABCI Young Members Charter during my tenure. We must play a meaningful role and not just party, wine and dine all the times as the older members perhaps currently perceive us.

  3. We need to maximise the use of online platform for communication, to share useful info and contacts in this globalised economy. We need to support each other to sail through our respective journey in Real Estate success. I have procured www.fiabciyouth.com and shall soon complete a facebook-like platform exclusively for the FIABCI Young Members. Each and every one of you will be given an account and you shall be duly notified to activate the same once it is ready. We can also consider a rebranding by calling ourselves "FIABCI Youth" instead of the mouthful of FIABCI Young Members. Polls and surveys will be conducted through this platform to better access the intent of the young members.

  4. We need to appoint a Chapter Coordinator for each of the Chapter to effectively coordinate the activities locally. We need to agree on a format to collate useful info and contact for the benefit of the greater young member world wide. We can certainly explore Antonio's idea of having the Young Members to generate content for the FIABCI Web Portal as well as the FIABCI Press. May be, Young Members should be driving the IT and On Line initiative of each FIABCI Chapter. We can start by understanding the functioning of the current website of FIABCI and then do road shows locally to educate all the members in maximising the use of the existing FIABCI Website.

  5. May be we can also start an annual gathering regionally for Young Members to meet for networking in a useful and affordable manner. Thereafter, we will submit the findings of the respective region for deliberation at the World Congress yearly.

The above are my suggestions and I certainly want to hear from you. The idea is that we chose just a few things and do them really well to show FIABCI the way. There is hope if we stay united and together we shall claim victory.

FIABCI is at crossroad now due to some unfortunate incidents triggered from the cancellation of the Beijing Congress and the harsh commercial reality that is faced by the world. We must unconditionally support World President Lisa and her team to drive us out of this storm; and at the meantime plays our role as the FUTURE of FIABCI in helping shaping and setting the direction of the Federation. FIABCI has been relevant for more than half a century and it shall continue to impact the world through YOU and me.

As for the rest of the team in the Young Members Committee, I am sure you are already familiar with:

  • Michel van Thiel, VP Europe - michelvanthiel@gmail.com, he shall continue with all the existing activities currently in place in Europe independently while allowing the rest of the world to catch up. All the best on your conference call with the active European members a few hours from now. Look forward to your feedbacks fro the group that you will be speaking too.
  • Oliver Villas Suarez, Secretary General - oliver@inmovilas.com

Meanwhile since Sakara Blackwell (sakara@optimumworld.com) has been re-designated by World President Lisa to preside over the Forum Committee, she is now only the acting VP for North America before someone else takes over. Emil Montas (emilmontas@gmail.com) of the Dominican Republic has been appointed by Lisa as VP Latin America.

There are still vacancies for VP Africa and VP Asia Pacific of which shall be duly filled up soon. I welcome your suggestions in this regard.

Meanwhile, I am also starting a special taskforce in Malaysia for this purpose and we are meeting this Friday. We shall report to you thereafter and I'll introduce the taskforce members then.

I am a big FAN of online social networking, so you can access to me at:

Whatever your preferred way of communications, I will try my best to get back to you as I value each and every comment that is for the betterment of FIABCI! Although I might take time to meet your expectations, my ears are all for you - each and every one of you.

Cheers, Chris Tan President, FIABCI Young Members Committee
